What is Bell's palsy?
Bell's palsy is sudden weakness of one side of the face from inflammation of the facial nerve. It often appears overnight, affecting eye closure, smiling and sometimes taste, and can be frightening for patients and families.
When should I see a neurologist?
See a neurologist the same day if facial droop is new — especially with arm or leg weakness, speech change or severe headache, which may indicate stroke. Isolated facial palsy still benefits from early steroid decisions.
How is it diagnosed and treated?
Treatment centres on timely corticosteroids, meticulous eye care and guided facial exercises. Imaging or further tests are used when onset is gradual, recurrent, bilateral or accompanied by vesicles suggesting Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
What recovery / prognosis can I expect?
About seventy to eighty percent recover fully, particularly when steroids start within seventy-two hours. Residual synkinesis can occur; early follow-up tracks eye safety and progress of movement.
