GBS, CIDP & Immune Neuropathy Treatment in New Delhi

Expert diagnosis and personalized treatment by a DrNB Neurology specialist.

Overview

Immune-mediated neuropathies occur when the body's defences attack peripheral nerves, causing weakness, numbness or paralysis that may develop rapidly (as in Guillain–Barré syndrome) or more gradually (as in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy — CIDP).

These conditions are neurological emergencies when severe and are highly treatable with immunotherapy when recognised early. Accurate diagnosis with nerve conduction studies and lumbar puncture guides the right treatment — IV immunoglobulin, plasma exchange or steroids — and close monitoring during recovery.

Symptoms

Rapidly progressive leg or arm weakness
Numbness or tingling starting in feet or hands
Difficulty walking or climbing stairs
Facial weakness or difficulty swallowing
Breathing difficulty in severe cases
Loss of reflexes on examination
Gradual weakness worsening over weeks (CIDP)
Fatigue and reduced grip strength

Causes

Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS)

Often follows infection; causes ascending weakness over days.

CIDP

Chronic immune attack on peripheral nerves — improves with immunotherapy.

Post-Infectious Trigger

Campylobacter, viral illnesses and rarely vaccination may precede GBS.

Multifocal Motor Neuropathy

Asymmetric weakness treated with immunoglobulin.

Vasculitic Neuropathy

Blood-vessel inflammation affecting nerves — needs specific therapy.

Other Autoimmune Causes

Paraproteinaemia and connective-tissue disease can affect nerves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. GBS can affect breathing and requires urgent hospital assessment and treatment — outcomes are much better with early care.

GBS develops quickly over days and often follows infection. CIDP evolves over at least eight weeks and causes chronic weakness — both are treatable with immunotherapy.

Clinical examination, nerve conduction studies, blood tests and sometimes lumbar puncture confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment choice.

Many patients recover well with appropriate immunotherapy and rehabilitation, though severe cases may need longer recovery and physiotherapy.
