Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder caused by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. It typically causes tremor, slowness of movement, stiffness and balance changes, and may also affect sleep, mood and cognition.

Early diagnosis matters. Many patients in New Delhi delay seeing a neurologist because they assume tremor is simply due to age or stress. A specialist examination can distinguish Parkinson's from essential tremor and other conditions — and early treatment improves quality of life for years.

Dr. Sudheer Pandey provides structured Parkinson's care: medication titration, management of wearing-off and dyskinesia, addressing non-motor symptoms, and emphasising exercise — which has clear benefits for mobility and may slow functional decline.

Parkinson's cannot yet be cured, but modern therapy controls symptoms remarkably well for many years. The goal is to keep you active, independent and engaged in the life you value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to common questions — when to seek care, what to expect, and what to do next.

No — essential tremor is more common and shakes the hand during action (writing, holding a cup). Parkinson's tremor occurs at rest, in the hand on your lap, and comes with slowness or stiffness.

Most patients are diagnosed after age 60, but young-onset Parkinson's can begin in the 40s or 50s. If you have tremor plus slowness before age 50, see a neurologist without delay.

Parkinson's itself is not directly fatal. With proper medication and care, most patients live a normal lifespan — complications from falls or immobility are what you should actively prevent.

There is no cure yet, but levodopa and other medications control symptoms well for many years. Starting treatment early and exercising regularly makes the biggest difference to daily function.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (brisk walking, cycling) on most days, plus balance and stretching work. Exercise is one of the few interventions shown to slow functional decline.

Your neurologist will start levodopa when symptoms begin interfering with work, dressing or daily activities — there is no benefit to delaying unnecessarily once function is affected.

Yes — about 30–40% of patients develop cognitive changes over time. Report memory problems, confusion or visual hallucinations early so your treatment plan can be adjusted.

Stop driving and see your neurologist if you have frequent falls, significant slowness, drowsiness from medication or difficulty reacting quickly. Many patients drive safely in early disease with periodic review.
